At Strathclyde, Professor Xiao is currently leading a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) & Computational Structural Dynamics (CSD) research group. Her main research interests lie in the application of CFD for flow analysis of bio-inspired studies and ocean renewable energy. Some of her main research themes include the physical phenomena associated with a flapping wing and swimming fish with their applications in bioinspired under-water robots; flapping-based tidal energy device; the offshore renewable energy devices such as tidal turbine, wave energy converter, the fixed and floating wind turbine; and offshore fluid-structure interaction such as Vortex Induced Vibration.
Throughout her academic career, Qing has taken on the role of primary supervisor for 14 graduated PhD, host for more than 15 academic visitors. She has secured a number of PhD scholarships, national and international funding and published over 120 papers at prestigious international journals.
In addition to her extensive research activities, Qing is currently the Editorial Board member of Ocean Engineering Journal, a senior Member of the AIAA, a Member of the ASME.

Yang Huang is a PhD in the subject of naval architecture, ocean and engineering. He has experience in the numerical simulation of hydrodynamic performance of marine structures. His main research interests lie in the application of CFD for flow analysis of ocean renewable energy.
Currently, he is working on the project “Bionic Adaptive Stretchable Materials for WEC (BASM-WEC)” a project funded by the EPSRC. The aim of this project is to develop an analysis and laboratory testing integrity toolbox to reliably design, analyse, and process the state-of-the-art adaptive stretchable materials and structures applicable to Wave Energy Converters.
